About ECIOSA

THE JOURNEY

We, the ex-students of ECWA Secondary School, Igbaja, formerly Igbaja Teachers College, being members of the Old Students Association, a non-profit, non-political and non-governmental organization, aware of the need to form a virile and viable Old Students' Association

1. The Idea of “The Shield”

No doubt, the idea of using the shield as the emblem (symbol) of the Institution must have come from the Scriptures, in Ephesians 6:16, in which Apostle Paul admonished the Christians to “take the shield of faith with which you can quench all the fiery darts of the wicked”.

2.The design of “The Shield”

Whoever designed the “The Shield” of the college was an accomplished artist: It is simple; it is bright and attractive; its color combination of red, blue and yellow, with black lettering, is superb; and its being held together by the Cross is significant. Written round the inner margin of it is the name of the college or the secondary school; and at the base of it is the pungent truism of the motto of the Institution – CHRIST ABOVE ALL.

3. The Appeal of “The Shield”

All the above features of “The Shield” combine to give it a distinguished appeal in the eyes of the beholder. Without question, “The Shield”, either as a handbook cover or as a school uniform badge, clearly stands out among its counterparts!

4. The Use of “The Shield”

Apart from using “The Shield” as the school badge that is sewn on the chest pocket of the students’ uniform, “The Shield” is the name and cover of the school’s Yearbook that is also students’ Handbook.

5. The Symbolism of “The Shield”

“The Shield” symbolizes continuity in the excellence for the Institution. As can be seen in the two pictures above, “The Shield” has remained as it had been from the beginning, even with the change of the Institution from a Teacher Training College to a Secondary School.

6. The Pride of the Students and the Alumni that “The Shield” is!

With all the narrations above, it is no wonder that “The Shield” has been a pride to generations of students and old students of the Institution – a Worthy Heritage indeed!

7.Shield in the Physical Realm

Shield in physical terms, is a tool in the hand of a warrior, for protection against arrows, spears and daggers, in the olden days’ warfare. Even today, the police force still uses the shield in the course of trying to quell riots and violent demonstrations. Lo and behold, in modern warfare, the shield is replicated in armored vehicles.

8. Shield in the Spiritual Realm

In the spiritual realm, the sure means of protection is to take THE SHIELD OF FAITH IN CHRIST, which is symbolized by the Cross, in the Name that is above all names, JESUS CHRIST! And this is prophetic and instructive to the alumnus of the Institution, as he or she launches into the tempestuous ocean of life, as it were!
